Potato Class

Lesson by Alex Zohar, Instruction by Carol Jones

Materials

Fimo 00 (Transparent), Fimo 0 (White) Fimo 15 (Golden Yellow), Pastel Chalks - 3 shades of brown                        Clear box (for shaking colors)  Razor blade, Ruler

Step #1
Mix 00 Transparent with a minute amount of 0 White and 15 Golden Yellow.  Mix well.

Step #2
Roll out a 'snake' approximately 1/4" and cut into 1/4" segments.

Step #3
Roll each segment into an oval or egg shape…these need not be perfect.

Step #4
Place 2/3 of the egg shapes into the clear box…leaving aside 1/3.

Step #5
Scrape 3 shades of chalk on to paper.

Step #6
Place the scraped chalk into the clear container and shake well.

Step #7
It's recommended that you use a clear box so that you can determine if you've shaken it enough, or if you need to add more chalk.

Step #8
In order to 'peel' the potato, hold the razor blade steady and move the potato.  You have better control this way.

Step #9
Note that you will have a bit of the white of the potato showing on the opposite side, just as you would in real life.

Step #10

Place the potatoes on parchment paper including the uncoloured potatoes and any peelings.  Put in oven 260 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes.

A suggestion for a scene is to have a cutting board near a sink, or on the counter or table with potatoes in the process of being peeled, and some in the pot already peeled.  Also, potatoes can be placed around a roast, or on a dinner plate or bowl.  There are many uses …including placing the peels on newspaper, getting ready to wrap them for the garbage, or loosely in a pot, ready for the compost pile.  You are limited only by your imagination!  Enjoy!
