Painted Roses on Mirror

Class by Carol Jones

Supplies

Small cloth or Kleenex
Small square wax paper or tile
Detail brush
Approx. 6 round toothpicks
Acrylics: - color of flower you want (eg. Red, pink, yellow
     Or even blue or purple)
    -White
    -Dark green
    -Brown
Rub-On -Paste (optional)

Step 1
Wipe your mirror with a cloth or Kleenex to ensure there are no finger marks on it.
Put 1 small blob of paint on wax paper or tile, using the choice of colour you want.
Put 2 small blobs of white paint on the tile.  You should have one of colour and 2 of white at this point.

Step 2
We want to have 3 values of the same colour - dark, medium and light.  So add one or two drops of color to one of the white blobs and add only one drop of colour to the other blob of white.  This will give you 3 tints.
KEEP SEPARATE TOOTHPICK FOR EACH COLOUR, AS THIS IS WHAT WE WILL USE IN PLACE OF A BRUSH.

Step 3
For the center of the roses, use your darkest colour and make 3 dots, going in a semi-circle, or C- shape in one corner of your mirror, using your toothpick

Step 4
Using your medium colour, and your toothpick, stroke a semi-circle under the dark colour.  Where you place these semi-circles will determine which way the flower is facing.  If you want the flower to face down, put your semi-circles on top of the first dot.  If you want the flower to face the right, then put the semi-circles to the left, etc.  Make sure that this colour touches the first colour, you don’t want spaces.

Step 5
Using the lightest colour, put semi-circles under the medium colour.  You can use some of this colour to put a V  or a U shape on top of your dark colour in the center of your rose, which will look like the bowl of the rose.  Don’t hesitate to go back and touch up or add a bit more colour.

Step 6
Put Brown on your tile or wax paper.  This will be for your branches.
Put out 2 dots of green.  Leave one as is, and with the other, add a few dots of the colour of your flower…this will ‘grey’ the green and not be as stark as using white.  You should have 2 shades of green.  You could make more shades if you wish.

Step 7
Using your toothpick and the brown,  stroke in branches in between the roses, and also some curved branches out the sides or top and bottom.  Using your toothpick, first stroke in leaves using the darker green.  Don’t be afraid to go on top of the branches you did, or even on to a flower.  Then go on top of this or beside it with the lighter green, using your toothpick.

Step 8
Would you like some buds at the end of a few branches?  Make a small V with green, and then stroke an oval of one of your colours in the groove.  If you want a more ‘open’ bud, then put a darker dot at the top of the colour.  You could also add baby’s breath here and there by dipping your toothpick into white, and blotting it slightly on paper, and then adding dots to your painting.

Step 9
Let this dry, and then using a fine brush, put sealer on top of the esign area only.  Sealer will dry clear.  Try not to get too much on the clear mirror…although it will dry clear.  Let dry and you’re done!

Step 10
Did I say you’re done?  Well, if you don’t want to highlight the frame then you have a ta-da.  Otherwise, you can put a bit of rub-on metallic gold, silver, copper,
