Meet Our Artisans

Alex Zohar

Alex Zohar discovered the world of miniatures in 1995 while living in France.  He enjoyed his hobby of building Roomboxes and from this wonderful hobby and his love of miniatures, Victoria MiniLand was born.   He enjoys working in polymer clay and wood, but most of all loves to share his knowledge with the customers who visit his store.

He lives in Victoria with his wife, Sigal, and their two daughters.

Carol Jones

Carol Jones has been creating miniatures professionally for approximately twenty years, although miniatures and ceramcis have been a special interest since childhood.  She previously owned a ceramic studio, The Slip Joint and co-owned Kno-Jo's Miniatures in Victoria, B.C.   She is a certified teacher and judge of Ceramics and Porcelain, accredited with N.C.A. and has also taught music.   She has been involved in teaching adults and children in many crafts, using many mediums, but  miniatures has been a favourite.  Her work in polymer clay, porcelain, and needlework is owned by people in many different countries around the world.  She also sells her work on ebay thru Taffy671.  She lives in Victoria, B.C. with her husband, Ken, enjoying her hobbies and grandchildren.  She is an active member of Small Endeavours Miniature Club.

 Dale Dirks

Dale Dirks, a versatile artist of North America’s habitat, is a self taught Canadian-born in Saskatchewan and served 34 years with the Canadian Armed Forces.  His work is detailed, capturing the essence of all subject material whether it is in his paintings or stone carvings.

His work has been shown across Canada, in California and in the New York area.

Dale taught art for the Department Of Recreation at the Laurentian University extension program of North Bay Ontario, he was commissioned to do a church for Lady Particia Braeburn, cousin to the Queen while stationed in Winnipeg  and his works whether they be full scale or miniature are collected by art lovers of all ages.

Penny Spense

Penny Spence has been making  miniatures for nearly twenty years, and sells at shows in Western Canada .  She has  also  sold some of her creations in England, France and Northern Ireland. Her favorite materials  are wood and leather. She lives in Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, and is a  founding member of the local
Mid-Island Miniature  Enthusiasts club.

SUE VINING

Sue Vining was born and raised on Vancouver Island and lives in Victoria with her husband, Gary, 2 cats, 7 birds, 6 albino frogs, 5 dwarf aquatic frogs and Ernest the Turtle.  Her interest in miniatures formed when she first saw a dollhouse belonging to Jean Day and the fascination of 'little things' grew.  Sue read books about miniatures and gleaned information from

anywhere she could find it.  She is self-taught and thoroughly enjoys building, painting and experimenting with miniatures.  She has many dollhouses and room boxes, of her own, and has given away her miniatures and swapped with people from all over.  She thoroughly enjoys painting pictures, primarily with water colour pencils, and has become quite well-known for her fimo cottages.  When she’s not mini-ing, she can be found in her studio sewing costumes for ballet, dance and swim teams.  She is a multi-talented lady and a member of the Small Endeavours Miniature Club in Victoria, B.C.

Nora Walker

Nora Walker of Bears with Tails has been making miniature teddy bears since 1999 in beautiful Victoria, BC. Although she has always been into sewing and crafts it had never occurred to her that an ordinary person could make a teddy bear. One day a friend gave her a kit for a 3 inch tiny teddy. Doubtfully she began sewing and a day later she had a sweet little teddy looking back at her. She was hooked. The idea of being able to create a teddy bear out of a scrap of fabric, a little polyfill, and thread captured her heart and imagination. The next bear she made she began djusting the pattern to make it more like the teddy bear she could see in her mind. From that moment each bear was designed by Nora herself. It just fascinates her to see how the smallest change to a pattern makes such a huge change to the final bear because in the miniature size every small change is so magnified. Every one of her bears is made with lots of love and careful attention to the smallest detail.

In October  of  2003 it was Nora’s great honour to present one of her teddies to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee during her visit to Victoria, BC.

8 of Nora’s tiny teddies are available for viewing at the Cheju Teddy Bear Museum in Seoul, Korea.

Her bears have appeared in the British magazine “Teddy Bear Club International” where she received a “Highly Commended”  in the “Miniature Bear of the Year Award” for 2001. Her bears can also be seen in the August 2002 and October 2001  issue of Teddy Bear Review and Teddy Bear Club International in January 2002.

Ruth Nicholl
Ruth Nicholl started painting miniature landscapes in 2003.  By the end of that year friends and family began to buy her work, and in  2004 she displayed and sold her paintings at Victoria's 'Bastion Square Festival of the Arts'.  Her interest in landscape art, beginning in early childhood in rural Manitoba, has been encouraged by travels within Canada and, since moving here in 1978, by the dramatic skies and scenery of  Vancouver Island.  She paints from life, photographs, memory or imagination, in  watercolour on mid-weight card.
A mother, step-mother and grandmother, Ruth lives in Victoria's South Jubilee neighbourhood with her husband, Brian Turner, and cat, Minnie

PETER DAWSON
Period Houses in Miniature

It was in 1943 that eleven year old Dawson was asked to make a model of a WWII tank. His first commission. It was for the wife of a tank commander who at that time was in North Africa fighting Rommel. Now seventy-three, Peter Dawson received his latest commission just a few months ago, this time for a miniature of a post-medieval English cottage. He is now busier than ever and shows no sign of slowing down.

Married with three grown daughters and two grandsons, Dawson has spent a lifetime building models for industry, architects, town-planners, civil-engineers and miniature collectors. First based in London (UK), then Toronto and later St. John's, Newfoundland, he has built models for projects around the globe. The latter part of his career, prior to retirement, was spent in Newfoundland where in l965 he became head of Technical Services, a division of government that catered to the needs of the museums and historic resources of that province.

Having daughters prompted Dawson to build his first doll house some twenty-five years ago, none of whom have yet to own one though. The first doll houses were placed on the auction block to raise funds for a childrens hospital. The ensuing publicity resulted in Dawson achieving his first doll house commission. Many more were to follow. Right from the beginning the objective has been to create authentic reproductions of period houses. Now long retired Dawson continues to do this, a pastime that is most satisfying and rewarding.

Sincerely,
Peter Dawson.

Pei Li

From young, Pei Li has been interested in crafts. She started collecting some miniature toys in 2004, and later, she started attending a couple of paper clay classes locally. This ignited her passion to seek and learn more, especially making 1:12 dollhouse miniatures. Pei Li has since been making and experimenting for the past year. She aims to start her own e-boutique this summer.

Arla Johnson

My passion with miniatures began as a hobby, evolved into a business where I found creating food my forte.  In 1999 I was thrilled to receive Artisan Status with IGMA in the food category.

This involvement has taken me down many interesting avenues including meeting many wonderful people and much to my surprise writing about 16 how-to-articles for miniature publications.

Thank You miniatures, for this adventuresome ride.
