'Egg Carton' Stone Wall or Floor Class (Pg 2)

When you have finished, you may want to chalk or dry brush a bit of colour here and there to accent it, or make it 'nicer'.  Don't over-do it, though!

IMPORTANT:  Apply two or more coats of Modge Podge Matt .  First brush in one direction, and then in the opposite direction so that there is a good coverage.  Let dry between coats.

There's a variety of things which can be used for grouting; Polyfilla, Spackle, Dry Wall Grouting, etc.  I use whatever my husband has left over in the garage.  They all work more or less similarly, and what one uses is a matter of what is available and which product one prefers.

If you want to leave the grouting without colouring it, then this is fine, but if you want to colour it, just add a few drops at a time and mix it well.  IMPORTANT:  Mix enough to do the job!  In this case, I mixed more than I needed and used approximately one of the small applicator bottles for the house.

IMPORTANTE: La mezcla suficiente para hacer el trabajo! En este caso, he mezclado m?s de lo que necesitaba y he utilizado unas peque?as botellas como aplicador para la casa.

Make sure that you have enough grouting and that it is thoroughly mixed.
Use a palette knife to transfer the grouting from your mixing container to your applicator bottle.

These bottles can be purchased at a drug store, or ask your hairdresser.

If you find the grouting to be on the thick side, then add water, a few drops at a time.  You do not want it be runny.

On the windows of my building, I did not tint or colour the grouting.
For the rest of the building, the grouting was tinted with a dark grey.

The grouting on the windows was applied first.

I found it easier to start at the bottom of the building and work up, but do whatever you are most comfortable with doing.  Carefully squeeze the bottle, going in between each and every stone.  Work one small area at a time, and clean up any 'oops' with a damp cloth.

Did you notice there are little ridges on some of the grouting?
This can easily be remedied by going over it with a damp cloth and smoothing it out.  You may want to use a stiff brush first.  What ever works best for you.

There is a method of putting the polyfilla over the entire piece, and then going back with a damp cloth, wiping, and wiping, and wiping.  I've done both methods and one is almost as much work as the other, but I like to use
the one with the applicator bottle, as I don't like to scrub the egg carton too much, and don't want the colour changed.

El del aplicador de botella es porque no me gusta restregar el cart?n de huevo demasiado, y no deseo que el color cambie.

Leave your work overnight.  When you go back to it, check to make sure you have enough grouting, and that your stones are nice and clean.

When you have it looking the way you like it, apply two coats of matt sealer over everything to protect it.

By changing the colour of your paints and chalks, you can make your piece a variety of colours.

When using it for the floor, the egg carton was covered with a more solid colour, and then other colours were sponged on it.  The same techniques were used on the floor as the wall.

If you want a wall around a piece of property, a narrow box can be built from wood or cardboard as the structure to be covered with the egg carton.

Don't be afraid to experiment.  There isn't a right way or wrong way.  The important thing is to achieve the look you want and to have fun!
